background of Lincoln's "Gettysburg address " was the American civil
war on more precisely, the battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle that
decided the fate of the war. the civil war provides the immediate occasions for
Lincoln's famous speech. the civil war occurred in the year 1861 and continued
till 1865. the whole nation of America got divided into two hostile blocks
mainly on the issue of slavery. the two parties of the war were the northern
and southern States of America. the northern States were in favour of the
abolition of slavery from all the lands of America while the southern States
were supportive of the system of slavery. this difference led the two parties
run into a fierce battle better known in history as the America civil war.
being the president of the United States during this great turbulent period
abraham Lincoln got involved with it and Abraham Lincoln was in favour of
abolition of slavery. the battle of Gettysburg was one of the grimmest of the
battles rendering many dead and many more wounded on both sides. the battle of
Gettysburg lasted only for threr days from july 1-3, 1863. it caused the largest number of
casualties. several months later on November 19, 1863, president Lincoln went to Gettysburg to
speak at the dedication of the cemetery for the union war dead.
